When trying to budget for food, it is important to plan out what your meals will be each week. Try to cook for more than one meal at a time. For example, roast a chicken - eat it with mashed potatoes and vegetable (can vegetables like green beans often go on sale), then use the meat for a Chinese chicken salad with cabbage (another economical choice), and use the bones for chicken stock for a soup and throw in carrots, celery, and kale for a healthy homemade soup. You don't have to sacrifice nutritional value when you are trying to budget. When you cook for example lasagna, freeze the leftovers in serving size portions for quick access. Try to stick to your planned out menus. That will help you find multiple uses for leftovers. Find alternatives to expensive convenience foods. Eat carrots and celery or apple slices instead of chips. Make ice tea and put in single serving size Rubbermaid bottles instead of buying soda (with high fructose corn syrup).
Also try to work one vegetarian meal in per week. Something with legumes (which is very economical). Beans and rice, lentil soup, etc. Again, once you've planned out your menu for the week - set aside the funds in an envelope, according to your own individual budget needs anywhere from $25/week to $75/week. Once the money is gone in the envelope, the food budget is used up for the week. That is why planning is essential. Good luck!

We spend about A$200+ per fortnight on "groceries" for 2 adults and 2 boys aged 4 & 6. We could cut this down a bit if we tried. To start with a budget though, you need to write down what you actually NEED per week / fortnight. After you've written down the food items, write down others such as bills, petrol / transport etc...there will be plenty of areas where you can cut back...

I am a single male and have managed to eat on $100/month since February. I have also lost 15 pounds in that time. Soup form a warehouse club runs about $1.00 a can. Avoid packaged meals and buy foods you coke yourself.
