Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely

Beyond that, they can be anything you want to achieve.

If you are talking about what major to declare...think about a few different things.

Can you realistically and feasibly get to a college that will give you a good education in this major? Can you afford that school?

Is it something you LOVE?

Is it marketable now and a sustainable career path to take? Can you take the degree into different directions depending on the market? For example, if you really want a career in marketing, you should study it. But studying marketing may be wiser as an emphasis, fleshed out by a general business or a business admin degree. That way you can get your feet in the door in more than one way, and move your way into a marketing position.
