In MA, and prolly plenty of other states. I thought necessary items were not subject to sale tax? Why is this, and why hasnt anyone done anything about it?

I live in Minnesota, and clothing is not taxed the same as other consumer products. However, if it were, I would not object all that much, since I am a home nudist and don't like wearing clothes anyway. Even If I were not, I would not care, because many things are taxed that people need - people need transportation to get to work, but all forms of transport are taxed. Just walking down the street, somebody has to pay for street repair, so property gets asessed. It's all part of living in society.

Not all necessary items are tax-free.

NJ does not tax clothing, but that is unusual. Most states do tax clothes.

In California, they do not tax candy, but do tax toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpaste. I do not think that candy is necessary, and I do think that toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpaste are necessary. I also think that they would obtain more tax revenue if they taxed candy and did not tax toothbrushes, dental floss, and toothpaste, and that dental health would be better, because it would be easier to afford to brush and floss, and harder to afford to eat candy.
