ahh cold hands!
- ok back to your question - This is throughout the book, not nessarily the begining

I just read this in English, and they are portrayed as dull people so completly imberessed in their morals that they do not have the ability to see beyond other's downfalls. They are uptight- but they too have their sins. The predominate description of them (in my opinion) is dullness. Every description creates a gray lifeless aura that is only broken by the main characters.Even then (excluding pearl) it is still in that puritan dullness. The narrator of this book does not really like the puritians, but it will develop into a respect for their ways. ah- well I probably have something wrong there but that is pretty close
