Beardog let me inform you about current Iraq. That was an invasion from United States and after coup on Saddam Hussein, they put a military regime, then they put a "civilian".Neverthless, that's makes United States an empire. Also, United States has a "small" colony in the Caribbean for 100yrs and counting and still doesn't decide what to do with it.I'm refering to Puerto Rico, where I live. What about Guam or Cuba(Guantanamo), etc etc etc. I think America is the greatest empire in the history of the world. Is that an honor or a shame?

It is an empire of culture, learning, technology, military, and of law.
Almost half the worlds countries have their constitutions and forms of government modelled after us.
Everyone wears American clothes and eats American food, watches American TV and movies, they follow American politics, flock to American Universities - America has tons of US colleges based in other countries eg. American University in Cairo, everyone uses American technology - the Internet being one of them.
Our military is peerless. The end.
And like I said before, most countries follow American style systems...including local law.

Bulldog agrees with Beardog. This country that we call America does not even close to being an empire. We are FREE and we have the choice to do as we please. Empires have Kings & Queens that tell people where they can go and when. As it has been said in the past an empire has their thumb on top of regular people. They allso have the right to do away with people they want to and no one will protect them like our judical system we have here. No one has the right in the U.S.A. to legaly have some one wiped out or tortured. Military and Veterans like me know more than most about how Great The United States of America is. Most of us have been overseas and saw how other people have to live. No Other Country has or will ever have what we have.
Super Power>YES but not an empire.
May God Bless the USA,
Bulldog

No we are no longer an empire, no longer adequate land and that component era isn't used anymore, it doesnt circulate alongside with our form of government. we are extremely respected nevertheless, yet no longer just about as much as befor the Bush administration. different international places sure are surpassing us economically and technologically, like China, the united kingdom, etc. good now we stand...properly we dont stand everywhere, have been in a disaster, recession, conflict, very just about a divided u . s . a .... yet ///the US has the flair to be the main respected great skill in the international returned, and can surpass the others in all techniques.

There really isn't any legal definition of empire.
In my opinion, a better descriptive word might be "hegemony". Most of our power is economic or political, and can't really be enforced, yet we still have great influence.

Empire: A political unit, usually larger than a kingdom and often comprising of territories or nations, ruled by a single central authority.
Nope, don't think so. Not with a "lame duck" president, a lame congress and with state constitutions in place.

NOT AT All. I am an Iranian. We in Iran love America than Americans because they are people who die to free other nations. We now much about brutality of Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam in Iraq. We hope someday our country be free from brutal regime of Mullahs.

No we aren't. Imperialism, like facism, relies on direct military control over it's own population. We aren't imperial, we're federal.

Probably.
The modern equivalent of an American "colony" is not to colonize it but to make it a base, then it can exploit that nation as needed.
The US has way too many bases worldwide.
Also, it uses military force to its political advantage if possible.
