i have always loved travelling in the united states. i haven't done enough of it. i must go to new york some time soon but money is tight. i have to see central park and soak in the ( i imagine ) contrasting atmospheres of times square and ground zero, see the sights that are portrayed in so many of the films and some of the tv i have enjoyed.
americans that i have met in the united states have surprised me, honest, hard - working people with complexity in their thoughts and ok, too much god worship for my liking, but americans i have met here in europe have generally conformed to the awful stereotype of being too loud, too arrogant, too culturally unaware, jingoistic ( gung ho ) single minded bullies and buffoons... and that's just the chicks ( joking )
bush, iraq etc plays no role in my discomfort about us cultural imperialism. i was well scared before that **** started happening ( though on the whole i support it ), "god", coke, macdonalds, hollywood - these are not forces for good but icons of us imperialism. on the whole i would like to see them crushed. but allah ( or whatever ) preserve the sopranos !

I know and am friends with some educated and intelligent ones on line , but...
Too many seem to be ignorant of the rest of the world and how what they do affects it. Also, even more arrogant than the French, and in love with their guns. A fair number seem to be under the illusion that the language they speak is 'American', not 'English', and that they invented the modern democracy. Also they seem to think that they live in the best and fairest country in the world, with the best armed forces.
Which is funny, because the modern style of democracy come from Europe, and I'd pick The Nordic countries as the nicest to live in. The US army is more dangerous to it's friends than it's enemies. If I ever get taken hostage by terrorists I want Mossad or the SAS to come get me!

You can waffle on about what ghastly wretches the Americans are until your aunty grows bollocks, but when considering the fact that we British colonised 40% of the planet over 300 years, dispersing, enslaving and often simply destroying any populations that happened to be in the way, it renders these cantankerous complaints about egoism, jingoism and single mindedness somewhat absurd, wouldn't you agree?
I believe it would be abhorrent, unlike most of these other vilifiers, to condense the attributes of an entire race of people into one paragraph. I did however meet many Americans while at university in London, the majority of whom seemed affable, broad-minded and sociable. It was interesting also to note their confusion when confronted with the aloof and often supercilious demeanour exhibited by the British, as well as the not so infrequent bigoted remark.
A thought provoking question.

Well being that I have lived in the US for over 7 years with my mother and step-father I can honestly say they are quite the egoists. They can't stand to be told that they are wrong....when they are................But they can be good friends too....................
