Yes, you are responsible for all 4 cars.
Any of the 4 can sue you. You are responsible for damages and medical bills for all 4 cars.
Someone without insurance rear ended my mom once. He tried to pay her off in cash. He ended up spending a few hours in jail.
And you can still be arrested for not having insurance. And for leaving the scene of an accident (since you apprently did not wait for a police report).
You need to contact a lawyer very quickly.

hi ... if you hit car 2 car 2 then hit car 3 and car 3 hit car 4 you are resonsible for all 3 cars. You were at fault for the crash.. now I asume the police were called and a report made... Ok... well there are a two ways this can develop. car 4 and 3's insurers will claim of you and thier attorneys will sue you. now car 2 you payed for the damage and got a release. Well the release isnt worth the paper its written on. An attorney will shred it .. and basically even if it is signed in the presnece of a notary its really not going to help.
If the woman has an injury even if it didnt show at the time her attorney will go after medical expenses and so will her insurance.
Basically never pay or sign anything like this especially if there are more than one car involved. Your insurer will not be happy !!

When I was in college, I had a fender bender and did not want to file a claim. I paid the guy cash, as you did, and had him sign a "TOTAL release," for ALL damages. If he signed that and tries to complain about his neck hurting, or something, most judges would say, "tough luck". He signed a release. You were smart to do that.
And for the guy who said you were stupid to try and do that. He is completely off base. Of course anyone can try to sue you, but that does not mean that they will win. You did not file a CLAIM with your insurance. That is all they care about. If you handled it through "mediation" then that is perfectly legal, assuming you had insurance.
I do not believe that you would be responsible for the other cars. If they were maintaining a safe following distance, even at a dead stop, they would not have hit the car in front of them.

You are 100% at fault for hitting car 2. You are partially at fault for starting the chain reaction. Car 2 didn't leave enough room behind car 3, and car 3 was too close to car 4. The extent of your responsibility is something that is usually decided by insurance companies.
In my opinion, you were foolish to do what you did. If you thought you could keep your insurance company in the dark by paying cash, you could be very wrong if the other two drivers file a claim involving you.

You are so hosed...you never should have admitted guilt or paid anything. I know that you hit her and were trying to do the right thing, but even if driver or car 2 and 3 were on the cell or applying make-up, it is now your fault 100 percent! Next time call the police and let them investigate it! In most states it is the law anyway, and you can get in serious trouble for leaving the scene!

Technically yes you are. Car 2 wouldn't have hit car 3 if you hadn't hit car 2. An car 3 wouldn't have hit car 4 if you didn't hit car 2.

Your not responsible for car 3 or 4, if they were behind you. Car 3 should be responsible for your car. Now if you started the domino effect, you might also be responsible for car 1. Usually each car is responsible for the car in front of them, because you must maintain control of your vehicle at all times.

Yes, unfortunately. Because you settled with car 2 it does not absolve your responsibility as the accident initiator. In every state your responsible for rear end collisions. Also, car 2 may still turn her accident into her insurance company, even though she absolved you of responsibility by your payoff. She may not have that authority if her insurance company is now out of pocket they may now come to you to cover any difference.
