I know most are going to say its the celebration of the birth of Jesus. It is actually a Pagan Hioliday celebrating St Nick (Sankt Nikolaus): Was born in the 3rd century. A little further in depth study, and you will learn a lot of how early Pagan traditions became symbolic in the Christianized/Protestant version of Christmas (and other traditional holidays). Santa Clause on Christmas has no significance with Jesus Christ. The amanita muscaria mushroom was very poisonous (German word for poison is gift) which grows only under guess what? A pine tree(X-mas tree). Santas elves revolve around the krampus (thought to be St Nicks nemesis by some and helper by others). The Amanita muscaria mushroom was a drug if used in slight quantities. Reindeer who ate the mushroom were seen strangely leaping in the fields (flying reindeer).
Human use of the drug required it to be dried out. It was hung in a cloth sack by the fire place(stockings). By the way the colors of the mushroom red and white.

Congratulations! You've finally discovered that like 99% of Christian holidays are nothing more than adaptations to convert the Pagans.

Now, start investigating Easter. You'll be shocked.

That is a nice little story. Like most holidays and symbols, the group that is celebrating gets to define and say why they are celebrating or how they are using the symbol. Since in this regard there is not one pure "truth" there can be many reasons for a holiday. I for one have been through the whole Christmas trees are evil and the work of the devil routine. I reject that use of the symbol. According to the Bible God made the rainbow to be a symbol of His love and a promise not to flood the whole earth again. Now if you ask people they will say it is a symbol of Rev. Jesse Jackson or the Gay Rights movement. I would say that all of these uses of the symbol are correct and truthful in today's world.

Yes Christmas is based on Pagan holidays. Although many people say that is a lie because it contradicts what they were taught growing up.

To me, it about spending time with family and friends, peace and harmony, honoring old traditions and creating new ones, giving your time and helping out those who are less fortunate instead of focusing on everything you want to receive, slowing down and taking in life one breath at a time rather than always being in a rush everywhere. I love the sights, sounds and smells of the season that you don't get to experience the rest of the year.

Notice that many religions have special holidays around the end of December. Although Christmas has Christian connotations, the Holiday Season is a time when many celebrate. The Pagan holiday is Winter Solstice.

Christmas is about giving. It is about thinking of others instead of yourself, it is about family, and reunions, and love.

I know in some ways it has become one big commercial blitz, but if we slow down- not let ourselves get worn out trying to be the perfect hostess or give the perfect gift, or have the perfect decorations- we can take the time to enjoy our family, share the love and the joy.

The answer to your question is in the all-time top selling book in the world. The name of it is "The Bible". Read it and you'll find out exactly what Christmas (remove the x) is. Aside from it being set aside as a holiday, it's a time a year when we find ourselves being a little nicer to each other, a time for giving, a time for peace and love and hope and faith. It's a shame that it takes a holiday such as this for mankind to behave a little better for a while but it's better than not at all. If everyone acted like this all of the time, the world would sure be a better place to live, wouldn't it? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I choose to believe what I stated above, you'll choose to believe what you choose to, and who is to judge us for whatever we believe in? We live with our own beliefs. Merry Christmas to you and yours and to end with a little humor, keep the reindeer away from the shrooms!

First, its CHRISTmas, and not Xmas. "Xmas" is "x"ing Christ out of the holiday, when Christmas is all about Christ! its all about the birth of Jesus Christ. Even though no one really know for sure if He was born on December 25th, that is the day that we choose to celebrate his birth on.

The birth of Jesus Christ but hey its seems more about shopping and getting all the stuff on your wishlist while stuffing your tummies and not forgetting the boring carols to make us get in the moods of spending loads of money.

I'm no scrooge

Christmas (and not Xmas) is the biggest pagan holiday and is highly overrated because we miss the true meaning of it.
