I agree with Akira. The 3 Investigators is a great boys' action detective series, and Encyclopedia Brown is nearly as good. I found the Hardy Boys too much (lame) action and too little detecting, and Nancy Drew, though significantly better, didn't appeal *strongly* to me because of the female main character (though I loved the "twin oaks" book (I think that's the title) because of the secret passages).

The Hardy Boys. I read that when I was his age. I also read and liked "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that one's great. And in the line of short stories, he may enjoy Edgar Allen Poe's The Purloined Letter, if he's an advanced reader. I know I was at his age.

My son--age 9--loves the "A to Z" mystery series....Some titles include, "The Absent Author", "The Bald Bandit"....you get the idea. My son is in 4th grade and currently reading a bit above his grade level, so they might be fun for your son as well. I like them too...Sometimes after my son finishes his read-aloud time, I find myself picking up the book and finishing it!!

How about one of the "A-Z mysteries" series? And one would do. They are by Ron Roy, are nice and short, easy to understand, and fun :) I used to read them and now ive given my series to my 9 yr. old sister :)
