Most assumed the war would be over quickly. After all by 1914 modern war had shown wars to over quickly. They didn't learn the lessons from the US Civil War, especially about trench warfare. Military experts of the time dismissed it as a backwater war that had no meaning to any future wars. As a result military plans were drawn up for quick wars ending in days and weeks, not years.

Read a book titled "The Guns of August" can't remember the author's name but it's woman. Very good book about the beginning of WWI. If I remember correctly most people across Europe cheered and celebrated the day war was declared, everyone believed the war would be short and their side would win.

People were howling for war in London, Paris (especially there after the humiliation of the Franco-Prussian War), and Berlin. "God is on our side". Unfortunately, the people we were shooting at were shooting back with the same nonsense on their lips.

Same as now but in different percentages. Back then you went to war for 'Honor' and 'pride'. There were those that did not want war. Today, more people do not want war. 'Honor' and 'pride' are a poor reason for war.
