Why does a child in a wagon seem to fall backward when you give the wagon a sharp pull?

The reason for this phenomenon is inertia - because of inertia, the child will stay in a consistent position and continuing this will be attempted as you give the wagon a sharp pull.

Air resistance and the force is not acting directly on the child but only on the wagon.
