When i turn on my car and go from "P" to "D" the car goes but then a couple of seconds later when i press it the car engine revs but it does not move and then it makes a noise and keeps going. This also happens when i try and do a broken U-turn and go from "D" to "R", the cars sticks. I know it has something to do with my transmission, but what is it? it only happens when i turn on the car and then it does not happen again. Why are my gears sticking like this??

Have the fluid level checked, if this is a newer model Explorer, it does not have a dipstick, and must be filled through the bottom of the pan using a pump. If the fluid level is good, more than likely you have a sticking shift solenoid in the solenoid pack. I have replaced hundreds of the solenoid packs for the same concern, delayed engagement.

The problem could be low fluid or a bad torque converter. With the engine running, pull the stick and check the fluid level. if it is low fill it with the correct type of ATF. If it smells burned or really dark you may need to change the converter. If you can't, have a transmission shop check it out for you, it can get expensive, and you may not want to sink alot of money into it.

So, I think it could be something with the actual shifter on the steering column. Just a side question, but do you "throw" it into D, P, R? By this I mean throwing it into gear quickly, I'd say faster than a second. Also do you regularly drive with OverDrive off or in 2nd Gear?

check fluid levels and be sure they are correct. Take the SUV to a transmission shop and have it looked at. The longer you drive it like this, the better the chances that you will do more damage to the tranny.

good luck
