Call and ask them or just deposit it and see what happens, leaving the money alone for 2 weeks or so.

If the check is sent to you with your legal last name on it I don't see a problem.
They will put a hold on the funds until the check clears which should be about 5 business days. So don't write out any checks on the $250 until you call the bank and they state it has cleared and the funds are available.
It's not any different than a check made payable to "cash" you simply endorse the back and write your account number under your name and it takes 5 business days to clear and funds made available.
So, the bank won't cash it on the spot but you can deposit the check and wait 5 days.
When you say "my bank" I take it you have a checking or savings account with them.
If you don't have an account with your bank, being a bank that you just use then you will have to go to one of those check cashing places.
National cash advance is the most ethical and legitimate and all you will need is a driver's license or photo ID - current- and they will cash the check and you will return in 5 business days for the money but they will take between $25 to $40 for doing this.
Good Luck.

They probably will, but it depends on the bank and who processes the check. This happens to my wife all the time. Her legal first name is Mary, but everybody knows her by her nick name which is Lisa. Sometimes we'll get checks may our to her nick name instead of her real name.
She usually endorses the check as it is written we deposit in the ATM. We've been doing that ever since we got married, and it has never been a problem.

Yes. You need to endorse the check as it as written and then with the name that is on your bank account. They may put a hold on the check for 2 - 3 days to make sure the funds are available.

They may cash it. I had the wrong first name put and the bank took it as the intials were still the same. I would speak to the bank before you deposit it and maybe get them to sign on the back to say they have authorised it. They should be ok if its similar like will instead of william but if its something totally different like 'phill' they may not.

No they are not suppose to. The check is suppose to be made out to the name on your account. Also if the bank that the check is written from sees that the endorsement is not the same as who they wrote it to they can return it for "endorsement not as drawn" (if they catch it).

No, you will need your legal name that is on the account...You had best call and have them put the correct name on the check.

Yes, especially if you deposit via the ATM. I don't know about other banks, but Wells Fargo never seems to verify/validate and of the checks I deposit in the ATM.

They will need your legal name as listed on your state ID. If you want the most accurate answer, CALL YOUR BANK.

Depends on the name you gave them. If your name is William and you gave the Bill, they probably would, since it's a common nickname. If you gave them a nickname such as Moose, you're probably going to have more problem. But it doesn't hurt to check with your bank anyway.
