Safety:
Learn how to fall FIRST, wear wrist guards (especially first season) and a helmet always
What to wear:
- Synthetic underwear (NOT cotton) on top, Patagonia is best (expensive but worth it)
- A good shell (not insulated) with hoodie or fleece (better) underneath. Layer so you can remove something when hot.
- Real snowboard pants with double seat and knees (I love my Burton pants, expensive but worth it especially when learning)
- Thin underwear on the bottom (synthetic)
- The best, highest gauntlet gloves you can afford (North face Goretex best, but $150+)
- A helmet
- Wrist guards
- Good quality socks - synthetic or wool, try Thorlos
- Goggles or sunglasses, your preference
- Sunscreen
What to Pack:
You won't need much at a resort. I carry a tiny waist pack with a snowboard tool (I use it every day), a bar of wax, money, hat, sunscreen.
After, you won't need that much, just a dry jacket and a warm lodge or car.
Good Luck

ok, I'm sure ur thinking about buying stuff or maybe using what you have.. I'd say try both.
Buy: Gortex gloves..mittens are better and warmer. Even if this is a one time thing. You can always use gloves.
A helmet. Good one like Burton's R.E.D helmets.
Wrist guards would not be a bad idea. It'd suck to get hurt on your first time.
Everything else you can rent, borrow or may already have.
Wear one pair of wool socks and no cotton anything.
Cotton absorbs sweat and makes you cold after awhile.
A basicbase layer is like underwear, so that with pants and a coat will be fine. You will not get cold like you think cause you are always moving and it's a real workout.

If you think you are going to really get into the sport BUY BUTT PADS, especially for your first time!!! Ive cracked my tailbone twice!
WHAT TO WEAR:
-Gloves- insulated, waterproof. Protect your hands from the cold because it is impossible to strap in when they are numb!
-Pants- wear a pair of jeans under snowpants. Keeps you a little warmer and dryer since you will be on your butt 85% of the time....no joke.
-Socks- wear a THICK warm winter pair on then put a pair of dress socks over them. The dress socks dont absorb water so your feet wont get soaked and freeze.
Coat- any waterproof coat works. You will be on your back a lot also, so make sure its waterproof. A hoody underneath is good for style and warmth.
-Hat- anything but the jester hat.
WHAT TO PACK:
-shoes & normal socks- for drive home
3 towels- everything will be soaked afterwards!!
-Extra hoody for after because the bottom of yours will be packed with snow.
-Food and drinks
-Pillows for your butt and noggin cuz you'll be tired
-Motrin
-Finally bring a lot of money for food at the lodge because you will probably get PO'ed from falling so much and sit inside all day!
SAFTEY:
- wrap your wrists with ace bandage. You will fall on your hands a lot. This will prevent sore or sprainged wrists.
-BUTT PADS BUTT PADS BUTT PADS
-wear a helmet if it is icy!!! The board will kick out more and its easy to slam the back of your head on the ground.
ps. Dont bring goggles because you only use them when its snowing and riding down the hill fast.
Good luck!!! Have fun!!

Gloves, boarding pants, depnding on the weather thermals if it's cold, for safety (wrist gaurds) may be you can borrow a friends pair. Good luck on your first time boarding. It can be a bit frustrating the first few times, but once you get the hgang of it, it's awesome!

gloves(water proof), googles(protect eyes from cold and sun) warm outer wear(suggestion:layer)...water proof jacket and pants...
safety tips: don't run into trees...and don't give up(1st day of snowboarding is always hell) if you give up, you won't accomplish riding..
have fun!!
p.s: don't ride when you have the flu...bad experience...didn't realize i could've gotten pneumonia...and that was my 1st time riding too!!
