depends on the type of bond formed

for an ionic bond, electrons are transferred

for a covalent bond, the electrons are shared

Electrons can be lost, gained or shared.
Whatever is easiest e.g loosing 2 celectrons......... or gaining 6? in that case 2 would be lost
Electrons can also be shared.
