Why do we have relations with dicatorships in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and communist China and Vietnam, but not Cuba?

======================

North Korea signed an accord in February with the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Russia and China to end its pursuit of nuclear weapons in exchange for energy aid and normalized relations with the governments in Washington and Tokyo. Kim Jong Il's regime shut down its Yongbyon reactor, which produced weapons-grade plutonium, in July.

The U.S. and North Korea have discussed the country's removal from the State Department's list of states sponsoring terrorism as part of the agreement.

this ? reminds me of the Peter Sellers movie The Mouse That Roared

he plays multiple parts & the idea is that this tiny principality is way behind in developing their country's economy, etc so they decide that the only thing to do is declare war on the US and lose and then the US will come in and modernize the country for them

(it's a comedy)

The U.S. will not normalize relations with Cuba until Cuba completely knuckles under to U.S. domination, like it did under Batista.

Why? Because Castro defeated USA, Inc. three times (revolution, Bay of Pigs, missile crisis forced a promise by Kennedy to the Russians not to invade again).

Our owners can't STAND it when they lose! Look at the way they took aim at North Korea (forcing them to give up their nuclear program), because Korea fought them to a standstill on the battlefield and forced the U.S. to sign an armistice. Look at the fairytales we're told about why the U.S. lost the Vietnam war ("Antiwar movement stabbed us in the back" and "We didn't take the gloves off.")

Cuba's very existence as an independent state is proof positive that it's only a myth that the U.S. and capitalism's victory is assured.

Because the USA has Guantanamo in Cuba. I dont suppose the US pays rent for the use of the land. It probably acquired that base (and the whole of Cuba as a matter of fact) as an aftermath of the war between the US and Spain. As I recall it Spain was paid with some amount for its colonies in Asia and it follows that those in South America are included as well.
So the USA doesnt need to normalize relations with them because it probably think it still owns Cuba.

We have strained relations with Cuba because of the large number of Cuban-Americans who continually petition the US government to continue the embargo of Cuba. They are mostly individuals and descendents of those who were forced to leave in 1959 when Castro took over the country,and they wield quite a bit of power in Florida and historically with the US federal government.

Cynically speaking, there is little benefit to forging relationships with a bankrupt country that can barely afford to feed its populace since the end of the Soviet Union patronage in the early 1990's. With the death of Castro, whenever that occurs, maybe things will change. Then, US taxpayers will probably pay for the reconstruction of Cuba.

No Cuba should develop a couple of nuclear warheads and then test it on Cuba after people like Michael Moore go there for a tan session...

In fact, now would be a good time for Cuba to announce a nuclear program (of course they'd say it was nuclear -power-). While our military might is tied up elsewhere! 8^)

We'll have normalized relations with Cuba when Castro is pushing up daisies.

You are right. If they were a real threat we would have free trade going with Cuba like we do with China.
