i got a letter in the mail today saying that my newborn almost 2 weeks old had questionable results on her newborn screening test for sickle cell disease. it says that she needs to be retested and that she could have the disease or be a carrier of the disease or that she could have nothing wrong with her. what are the chances that there is nothing wrong with her? this is my first child and im scared to death.. thanks for any advice!

Unless it runs in your family or your of african american decent I wouldnt think twice about it.

A lot of those tests always end up with a false positive.

Just take her in and have it done again.

I would do the repeat test. Does your baby have African American blood lines? If so, she could be a carrier but in order for her to actually have Sickle Cell anemia, both you and her father would have to be carriers for the disease. Could be a false positive but it's worth ruling out!

Good luck and congrats on your baby!!

I would be upset to get such a letter in the mail. Why couldnt those idiots just call you and and talk to you? I would call your doctor and talk to them about it and then go in for the counseling and see what else needs to be done to have the little one checked. Those people were idiots to send a new mom a letter like that! I myself would change clinics or talk to my doctor about how you want to get anymore information/news like that. Its very upsetting.

I used to furnish infinite possibilities and ask your self why i became consistently getting stepped on and used. I infrequently provide something extra beneficial than a 2nd possibility except you're an exceedingly close and depended on confidant.

I'm not really sure. I know it is more common among african americans. Good luck and I hope everyhthing turns out alright!
