Since the chicken is irrelevant, so far he has cut 25 + 30 + 55 + 85 = 195 pounds of beef. He still has 285 - 195 to go, or 90 pounds.

First, determine what information is needed to solve this problem. The problem is asking for the amount of beef, so the time of his break (10 min) and the amount of chicken (35 pounds) is extra information and not needed for solving this problem.

Next you have the amounts of beef that he has already cut:

25 steak
30 ribs
55 roast beef
85 hamburger

Now you have a two step problem:

1. add together all the kinds of beef.

2. subtract that answer from 285 to get the number of pounds of beef he still has to cut before he can go home.

The chicken has nothing to do with the problem. It is unnecessary information.

Add: 25 lb steak + 30 lb beef ribs + 55 lb roast beef + 85 lb hamburger. = 195 lb.

Subtract: 285 lb total needed - 195 lb completed = 90 lb still need to do before he can go home

90 lbs of beef. The chicken is irrelevant. He has used
25 + 30 + 55 + 85 = 195
285 - 195 = 90
