the answer (i know) is eight thirds but my teacher takes whole numbers not mixed numbers

If I understand your problem, you are asked to divide 1 (or 8/8) by 3/8. Invert and multiply: 8/8 * 8/3. The answer is 2 2/3.

you calculate 1 shared by 3/8 which equals 8/3 = 2 2/3

so it is 2 and 1/4
