OK... I'm Japanese and my husband American.
We are having a baby boy in February...
Now here is a big problem for us.
Can't find a good name.
Well, actually can't find the one we both like.
Since I'm Japanese, I want to name our baby which is popular in both country, such as Ken, Joe, George, Sage, and so on.

However, my husband says
1. must sound powerful and strong
2. no 'unisex name' like 'Sage'
3. no nickname as proper name such as 'Joe' ('Joseph' is fine)
4. 'white name' is preferable.
5. not too short like 'Ken' or 'Jake'...
6. when you say first name + middle name + last name, you must be able to say with rhythm.
7. No way for 'George' because of GWB.
8. Proper name which can be called by a nickname too, such as David-Dave, William-Bill, and so on... So nothing like Jake, Ken, or Eric...

He prefers the name which doesn't sound strange in Japan too, but as long as he is picky that way, it is very difficult...

Other than "worldwide name", how did you decide your kid's name?

Did you fight with your wife/husband a lot over kid's name???

Thank you guys for your ideas for our kid's name!!

My husband's first name is Daniel, and my in-law's name is James, neither of them are not on the list...
(But he says "Daniel" is OK for a middle name).

"Jake" was rejected last night...

Probably we cannot decide even after our baby is born...

And Savannah, sure I will let you know after we decide. :-)

Me and my husband had a similar problem. I am American (white) and my husband is Mexican and I wanted names for our boys that were versatile and reflected both heritages. I went through baby names lists, books, and websites looking for Mexican/Spanish names that were also names in English too. Then we just narrowed it down by what we liked and what we didn't like and eventually found a few names that we both really liked.
Tell him to suggest some names with all of his criteria in mind and the fact that you want the name to be Japanese too. After he realizes how hard it is, maybe he will be a little more open-minded.
What about:
Benjamin (and call him Ben)
Kenneth (and call him Ken)
Daniel (and call him Dan)
Good luck with your baby boy!

My oldest son is Erick. We sometimes call him Eri for short. Erick means "eternal ruler" and this is also my husband's name. My second son is named Alexander (although my husbands family sometimes calls him Alejandro) but his nickname is Alex (which is in both languages) and Ali. Alexander means "defender of men". Both names are very strong-sounding in my opinion.

Well he's awful picky for not even doing any of the work...

For us...I would find names that I liked and put them on a piece of paper...my husband would then cross off the ones that he truly didn't like. Of course he was a LOT more understanding. For most of our kids it was a you name the girl I name the boy arrangement with both parents having final veto for ones they really HATED (but it had to be reasonable)

I would suggest for you....buy a baby name book and give it to him..BOTH of you write a list of names you like (separately from each other) Also write a list of names you HATE. Whatever name is on both list...that's what you name your child.

Unfortunately this is serious business but you both need to have a little compromise with it. If you're already fighting over this...I can imagine what will pop off when it comes to bed times, food, and discipline.

Good luck

William is a good strong name with lots of potential nicknames (Billy, Will, etc.)

Frederick (Fred, Freddy, Rick, Ricky)

Nathaniel (Nate, Nathan)

Jonathan (Jon)

James (Jim, Jimmy)

Nicholas (Nick, Nicky)

It's a shame because Sage is really nice, maybe you can use it as a middle name? Jonathan Sage would work.

my first daughter, i was set on rosemary until the day she was born (next morning) i called her grandmother (in mexico) and she helped me pick her name Daniela Betsabe. and then my second daughter, i was so sure of naming her eva lynn and then when she was born i found out the girl in the room next to me just named her baby eva lynn and since i dont want her name to be too common like that. i ended up the next day sitting there going through a list of names with her grandma in mexico (differnt grandma) and i didtn like any names she picked so i named her Gianna Ixchel (names i had heard during my pregnancy

I didn't like any of the girls names he picked out. I suggested he name the baby if it is a boy and I would name the baby if it were a girl. The baby was a boy and he chose Robert.

For a boy i like the call Parker it is truly lovable. i do no longer comprehend approximately giving him the middle call applicable he would get teased lots at college. young ones would properly be very mean.for a woman i like Kaci Grace it is truly lovable.

I think Eric would be good, because it can be shortened to Rick, or Ricky.

Also:
Eric (Rick/Ricky-エリック)
Micheal (Mike-doesn't translate)
Kevin (Ken, Kev-ケビン)
