There is a paper stuck on it that tells the model # energy used etc., but I don't see a year on it anywhere. It's a Carrier packaged outdoor unit. The model# is 48SS-036080311. If anyone has the abilitiy to look up the year on that model and maybe give me any other info I'd appreciate it. It needs to be repaired and I want to make sure it's not too old. Also, if that model is known for having any specific problems I'd like to know that as well.
Thanks!

You provided the model number, which tells me it's a 3-ton heat/cool package unit. I've installed scores of these over a span of almost two decades. 48 = combination heat/cool, not 4-ton like someone else pointed out. 036 = 3 ton. 080 is an assembly line process number. 311 means single phase electric, version 1.1.

Post up the serial number and I'll tell you the age. Another poster correctly pointed out that the first four numbers will be something like 2596. That translates to the 25th week of 1996. Hope this helps.

Call an HVAC company to do an inspection. They don't charge for that (or some token amount). The technician should be able to determine how old it is and whether it's worth repairing.

Generally, any appliance that's more than 10 years old is a candidate for replacement versus repair, because the new models are so much more energy efficient than models just 10 years ago. You can also get rebates and tax credits for purchasing new Energy Star appliances.

The serial number has the coded time it was assembled, it is usually easy to figure out the year. The model must be a four ton 48ss, or 48000 btu's

These units were the low end product that Carrier made in the late 1990s. It is probably about 10 years old. If it is a big problem like the compressor I would replace it since these were never great machines. If it is a simple problem like the contactor then I would fix it.

The date should be in the beginning of the serial number, example if it is 23037784 it would be the 23rd week of 2003 or 03'
