Low level temperature inversions act to trap pollutants and prevent the air from being mixed out. This is why places like the southern California coast and Denver tend to have problems with smog. Denver can really be smoggy in winter since it lies in a valley.

The term 'Smog' is a contraction for 'smoke fog'.Smoke and other form of atmospheric pollutants play an important part in the formation of this type of fog. They act as condensation nuclei in the formation of the fog.It is produced by the reaction of certain hydro carbons and oxides of nitrogen (mainly from motor-car exhaust) in the presence of the sunlight.
Photochemical smog is thus produced and it is a form of air pollution characterised by haze, eye irritation and plant damage and frequently occurs in Los Angeles.
