It is according to what "cult" you are talking about. Some people call the L,.D.S. religion (Mormon) a cult, and it certainly does not apply under that reasoning. (I am not Mormon).

If what you are referring to is a real "cult". This is my opinion.

Some people want to be told what to do. They want somebody else to control them so that they don't have to think for themselves.

Once they get into the cult, and listen to whatever is being said, it is similar to being hypnotized. They go along with everything and don't question anything.

That is why, in the past there have a few examples of a whole group of people, in the hundreds, committing suicide together because they have not been thinking for themselves. We have been given free will, we can make our own choices but many feel so bad about life and themselves that they choose to let someone else think and decide for them.

Wanting to be a part of something would be a main cause and of course brainwashing! Someone who is easily led would be a good target for these cults.
Also if someone is not happy with their current situation.

People who are susceptible to joining cults are those who are weak minded, easily led, have low self-esteem, are disaffected, and feel a need for belonging.
