I am graduating with a degree in Social Studies Education at UCF in Orlando,FL this December (07). I could possibly move to SA one day, just not sure when. I was wondering about teaching in or near san antonio and what the chances are of getting a social studies job there teaching middle or high school. Any info would be great.

In San Antonio the largest and best 2 school districts are the North East ISD and the Northside ISD. These are both adding new schools every year and add new teachers every year. In general there are some requirements to teach in the school systems in Texas, but many of those can be accomplished while working as a teacher. These include Texas History and a test of competency in your area.

What I have found worked well for some people I have known was to start as a substitute, and move into a long-term or permanent sub position. The person is then first in line for the position at the beginning of the next year.

As an example. A new full time teacher in the NEISD in San Antonio with no experience would start at approximately $44,000/yr.

San Antonio is a wonderful city and we would love to have you come to live with us.

I lived in San Antonio in the early 60s. My niece lives there now. It has a good in between moisture level. If you are from El Paso, Arizona, New Mexico you might find San Antonio humid. If you are from Houston, deep East Texas, any of the southern states on the Gulf Coast, you will find San Antonio has a relatively dry climate. There is enough moisture for some greenery but not the lush greenery of the more humid rain filled areas. There is always a risk of flash floods there. Since it is somewhat a roving hilly area this can be a problem at the bottom of the hills. Actually San Antonio has a good southeast breeze. After dark in the summer, it will still be in the 90s but because of the lower humidities and that southeast breeze it is very comfortable. The same is true if you are in the shade during the summer. But if you stay out in that sun very long in the summer it can dehydratee you pretty fast. I went to San Antonio during Hurricane Ike. One day when the storm was out in the gulf they had a humid day. Then the storm went another direction and it was very dry and pleasant.

Why don't you get help from other SS teachers. Go to sites where many teachers hang out: http://www.tuitionplaza.com/tutoring/
You can network and share experience with them. Hope this helps.
Good luck!
