the Dresden firestorm happened because the Allied forces wanted to demoralize the German people, damage German manufacturing, and test new weapons and tactics in the most realistic way possible.
Here are some better links. I encourage you to read them and come to your own conclusion about the causes, effects, and morality of the Dresden bombings.

February 13 1945.
The Russians were advancing through east germany and the western Allies wanted to demonstrate their firepower.
There was no military need for such a devastating raid as Dresden was full of refugees and allied prisoners of war and at least 80,000 people were killed most of them civilians.
The R.A.F. bombed during the night with high explosive with destroyed the water supplies and blocked roads then the U.S.A.A.F bombed in the day with incendaries setting the city ablaze and the population had no water to fight the fires.
This created a firestorm which suffocated people even if they were safe in bomb shelters by using all the oxygen.
If you want to find out what it was like read Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut who was an American prisoner of the Germans and lived through it.

Dresden happened because there was a war. Plymouth, Coventry, London, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, Bristol were also nearly anihilated with an enormous loss of life because there was a war. The instigator of this war - Hitler - wanted to dominate the world and unfortunately Dresden was seen as the major cities in England were seen, as a useful target for domination.
