Of course you should...

And by the way... you can't really stop them... Hip is all over... it's on TV shows, Commercials, Stores... plus think of there friends that lisen to it. If you try to stop them it will only make them want to lisen to it even more.

I grew up lisening to hip hop and I turned out just dandy.

truthfly there are lots of bad messages in some rap songs so if thay want to listen to rap get them an ipod and buy good clean songs that dont have a bad message to them and let them listen to that but if your the type of parent that doesnt quite care what the message is go a had let them listen to what they want but i whould go with the first idea.

Yeah you should let them listen to whatever they want. But I do suggest you take up some kind of interest in things they like. I don't mean you should start wearing baggy pants and greeting them with a generic "yo". But show them you are open minded and even if you aren't familiar with it, you're willing to get exposure to it.

This will help you get a better understanding of their world without being their bff.

And please remind them that they can appreciate the music and culture of hip hop without actually embodying something they are not. AKA gangsters from the suburbs.

most rap lyrics are influentual in a good way a talk about past mistakes which they regret or world peace, it was through listening to rap lyrics that I learnt to really value my family life and spend more time with my friends and family.
However, there are a few songs which are a bit more light hearted and could be taken the wrong way.

I don't like rap but I also don't believe in not allowing other people to listen to it. You don't say how old your children are but chances are, they probably hear it at their schools all the time. I think you should talk with them about it and what messages are in it. They might decide on their own that they don't like it, like both my daughters did.

Yes, you should let your children listen to rap, just be selective on what they're listening to. My son wants to listen to the Soulja Boy and the Bow Wow and the Lil Wayne, but they're not rapping with purpose so I ended that. People like to think that Rap=Ignorance=Ignorant children. That's not the case, its really Ignorant rap=Ignorant children, NOT DUMB JUST IGNORANT. Theirs nothin wrong with ignorance, but it is wrong to see ignorance and go without acknowledging it. Put your children onto rap artists with a purpose.

Sure. Don't buy anything edited though. You would be cheating them out of good music. Just stick to MC's that don't curse (or curse minimally) but still show lyrical ability. Try Lupe Fiasco and Common. Stick to old school hits too.

no.
i live in a horrible area. u ask anyone here that's like them what their influence is, it's gonna be some rapper. rap is retarded and a sorry excuse for music and it has horrible themes and shows no respect to anything.
it's a bad influence, but ultimately should be up to ur kids if their like teens, any younger and it's up to u i guess. that came out wrong, i mean up to u, but like if they're teens, they're gonna hear it anyway probably.

yes
my mother let me and my brother listen to explcit music and we turned out just fine

Although, before you let them listen to it, it's important that you explain to them that they should not repeat the lyrics and they shouldn't reinact actions that are expressed in the song. They should take precaution when listening to music.
