I've had a professor with a doctorate in Latin American studies state that Mexico is a part of Latin America but i've had so many educated people disagree. Your opinion?

People who disagree argue that Mexico is a part of North America and therefore not a part of Latin America.

Mexico is part of Latin America but is an independent country within the continent of North America. It can even be narrowed down to being part of Spanish (Hispanic) America, to differentiate it from the other 'American' countries such as Canada, USA, Guyana, Surinam, Brasil etc. In general, Latin America refers to countries who have Spanish or Portuguese (and possibly French) as a main language
To Phaba, you may have lived in California for 51 years, but your reply to what is a perfectly sensible question just shows your ignorance, bad manners and prejudice towards people who make up a very large, talented and proud proportion of the United States of Arseholes.
As for 'Bell del Sur' what are you going on about? King Geo III reigned from 1760-1820. In 1642, England was going through a Civil War and it was king Charles I who was on the throne. You are obviously mixing up your civil wars. If yoy are an American, then I could excuse your ignorance. If you are British, then you either had a bad history teacher or didn't pay attention in class

First I must say that Mexico really is part of Latin-America.

Mexico is also part of North America. America (the continent) is divided in three: North, Central and South.

In the US, America means the country, but the result is the same as the continent is known as The Americas: North, Central and South.

Like I said, Mexico is part of North America either way, and is also part of Latin-America.

Hi Gina. Your professor is right. According to geographical classification, Mexico is part of North America, but culturally and historically, Mexico is part of Latin America. This is because Latin America refers to all countries colonized by countries whose languages come from Latin, i.e., Spanish and Portuguese. French Guyana is also included since French comes from Latin as well. Surinam, formerly Dutch Guyana, and Belize are also included, even though Dutch and English are not Romance languages, (from Roman, Latin). Hope this helps.

Mexico is a part of Latin America. It is tied to other Latin American countries through language, and culture. It has the same heritage as those countries have. I see no reason why it should not be part of Latin America.

Mexico is part of Latin America.
Mexico is part of North America.

It's not really an opinion, it's really a matter of definition and categorization. All we need is a definition, and some qualifying criteria.

What is the definition of "Latin America"?
Is Spanish a prevalent language in Mexico?

I think of Mexico as it's own seperate "area/country" and Latin America as South America.. I'm Latin America which I believe seperates me from being Mexican/Puerto Rican.

The "educated" people have zero idea. The problem w. Mexico is they want to be western but want to be hispanic. Pretty much the whole hispanic issue is this. Mexico on down to south america..... a conquered people who speak a european language. Failed civilization 3000 years back even though they have resources that far exceed other regions.

It appears to be an inner insecurity. But all would be well if Mexico joined the world.
