I just finished the book and I really thought it was a great story! But I'm still curious if anyone thinks that they made it. I'm going to say no because from Maine to Hartford is about 200 miles, while David said they probably only had 90 or so miles of gas left in the tank. And I don't think they would survive getting gas at a station. On the other hand, David said he left the story on the table and to leave it in case someone found it. So what do you think really happened?

Edit: Yeah Mammabear, get "The Skeleton Crew" by Stephen King it has a bunch of short stories, plus the movie's coming out soon. I extremely recommend reading it.

I don't think we SHOULD know. I loved shawshank both the story and the movie but I think it spoils it to know morgan freeman makes it. the whole point of the story is to go on and hope even if your afraid. That's how the story ends, with his character, learning the value of hope and hoping he makes it as the bus takes off.
In the Mist we should see David whispering too his son and them taking off without seeing if they survive.

Oh, they all die.
The story was written in a Lovcraftian fashion. There isn't much hope for us mortals when the Old Ones come back, according to Lovecraft.

I really could not put my self in the position of second guessing Stephen King.
