NO i wasn't defining stubborn people as people who don't accept my arguments. i was asking about what happens when encountering stubborn people......

well sometimes if i debate with others i feel they can't handle being proved wrong. so thet would rather try and confuse me with incoherent arguments and unprovable believes than face up to the fact that theyare wrong.

You can't, thats why they are stuborn, they won't listen to logic, you can shout till you are blue in the face but in the end they still believe the grass is purple. If you could do this, then there would be no such thing as liberals

My dear fellow debater. The entire rationale behind debate is two or more people discussing a topic and trying to find the truth. There is no truth. Debate consists of statistics. The best example of debate is the defense and prosecution in a court trial. Neither are 100% correct but hope they are correct enough in order to convince 12 people that their part of the debate supercedes the preponderance of the evidence percentage of the case. I too have been an avid debater and sought to convince anyone and everyone that I and only I were right. This is a waste of time. You are the stubborn one.

Since this is the Psychology Section, I'll ask you why its so important that they do come around to agreeing that you were right? Perhaps it you being stubborn, and failing to recognize the fact that your opinion may not be the only right one?
Maybe what you class as a "long debate" is nothing more than you being unwilling or unable to concede the point? Why not just agree to disagree? Why not just accept that people do have the right to differing points of view?

1. If they are truly stubborn, they aren't going to be convinced your argument is correct.
2. Additionally, there are psychological theories that suggest that when you challenge someone on their beliefs, they sometimes "buck up" and defend their own beliefs stronger.
3. Even if you do know better, people don't like a "know it all."
4. You might also say something like,"Well, that's interesting. My understanding is that the data suggests this..."

Let them explain their side first then, pin point what wrong with it. And then show how your "argument is more effective". Or you could ask a series of questions to make them reallt think how crazy their theory is then show them how great your argument is!!

Your definition of stubborn people - those that won't accept your arguement - makes this question redundant and self-defeating. You have to begin from where the people are and they won't accept your premises and your logic from those premises, then you just give up convincing them.

Sorry if you failed during the debate then your argument may not be the stronger one, or they just won't listen. Either way it really doesn't matter as the debate is over.
Good luck

You can't. And of course, there's always the chance that you're wrong, and there's a very good reason they can't be convinced.
