I found that there was always a few woman despite the 'historical barriers' that were able to move up in the world, get education and the like if they worked hard enough and were strong enough to deal with the negatives.

It depends on what you mean, but at one point in time women were not treated as equals and were not considered humans and were expected to stay at home.
