There is some good reading out there on narcissism. I read an article a while back, but cannot retrieve it from memory right now. I know that sometimes, it is seated in early childhood abuse.
My own experience with it is that it is rather destructive and uncomfortable to deal with.
Read up and adapt for your needs as best you can.

Dr. Cox is the perfect occasion of a narcissist I certainly have seen and if I had to handle him on a typical foundation i might: many times be aggressive and decrease him off mid speech grant heat and happy greetings while feeling invincible adolescently shrink him down for being so self-in contact

Stay away from them as much as possible or leave. These folks can do some real damage to others if you let them. You always have choices.
Step back and try to objectively review your situation and choices. And take the best course of action.

I work with one.
Me & my coworkers mostly ignore or humor her...then laugh about her behind her back.
These people are very stressful to be around, so I feel your pain.
If it is a family member, limit spending time together as much as possible. If its a spouse.....try counseling for them, then the marriage. But I doubt it would help at this point.

Like Grant said - Everyone has choice. You might not realize it and it might seem scary -- but everyone has a choice.
How did I deal with a selfish narcissist - I divorced him.

KNOW people before you truly befriend them and allow them into your house and life. KNOW them for years before you marry them.
AND look up the symptoms of bipolar disease. There are many websites devoted to this disease which is becoming more and more common across the entire world.
God bless you and good luck.

Don't you think it's a bit of an overcompensation to low self-esteem? Like my friend used to say - egomaniac with a self-esteem problem. Are they bipolar? they also can go together.
