after he hit the ball, he was tagged out at second base. how can an out be a hit. i know im missing something here, so someone tell me what im not seeing.

It was a single and he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. He reached first base as a result of the single.

If you make it to first base safely, it's considered a hit. Getting tagged out at a later base doesn't negate that.

Yes, he had already hit first base so it's at least a single

As long he reached ONE base safely, it is considered a hit.

The 1st guy is right. As long as he touched the 1st base, it counts as a hit.
