As twentieth century music goes... yes it is pretty good. The most incredibly inspiring piece of music ever... hardly. Compared to some works by the likes of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach, it does not rate in the top ten in terms of this imaginary category of "inspiring pieces of music."
Love it though.

The trouble with The Planets is that parts have become so hackneyed that we forget quite how ground breaking it was. It also tends to overshadow, and makes us forget, much of the other excellent music Holst wrote. Things like 'The Hymn of Jesus' , for example.

I'm surprised, incidentally, that one answerer says he saw Holst on TV as he died well before that came into use!!!

It was my first love in serious music as a teenager , because of it's fantastic tunes. Now I think it's just a good piece of programme music. My tastes have graduated over the years and now I think Bach's Organ Toccatas are among the most inspiring music ever written.

Yes it is! I think if those planets ever get anthems, these pieces should be it! They sound so majestic to the point that you could imagine those planets in your head while listening to their respective pieces!

Totally, I love it, it conjures up all sorts of images in the mind. If you ever get a chance listen to Tomika's electronic version.

It's pretty impressive. Apparantly 'Mars' influenced Barry's 'Death Star theme' in Star Wars. Now that's trivia!

....if you are not familiar with classical music, Holst can be a good entering point....he is a lightweight, not what you would consider great at all
