Chickens are birds, so I assume they do it like other birds. The male stands on the female's back and tickles her back and neck and rubs his cloaca against hers under her tail, and sperm is thus transferred to her and travels up inside her. There is no penetration. Both of them seem to enjoy the procedure. Often the male will grab head feathers during the procedure, so that females sometimes have bald spots during mating season.
Birds can lay infertile eggs without mating, and chickens have been particularly bred to be very good at this.

Youtube actually has videos (search "bird sex"). Interestingly, bird intercourse (excluding ducks and swans, which have penises) is termed "cloacal kissing" (which acknowledges how bizarre it is) since there's no real penetration. It's like two lips touching; with some species it's really brief too.

Birds mate just as humans do, just in a different 'posture'. They must mate to fertilize the eggs, or no chicks would be born.

They dont. First the female lays the eggs then the male or the rooster fertilises it!

chickens dont have sex, a female is capable of laying eggs without the male. tho if there is not a male the females will not hatch the eggs. the males are there pretty much for a social keeping. and if there is no male, females will stop laying in time
