Freighter travel would be the way to do it. Figure on about a week sailing time from Seattle to Yokohama. The passenger accomodations on such ships are as good as a cruise ship-but no casino:).

I'd say she should get over her fear...Taking a boat to Japan is very costly, not to mention SLOW. She would be spending more time at sea than she would her stay there. And how about being sea sick ? Booking a boat trip to Japan won't be easy either.

There are no *regularly scheduled cruise ships between Japan and the United States.
You'd have to find or charter yourself a ship not exactly cheap to do!, or pack it up on a cargo ship, not very comfortable...
