Hi, my beautiful wife and I are expecting to have a baby soon, and are wondering if hospitals like little company of mary only allow natural bbirth through the vagina, or also do c sections. I over heard someone at my work saying they do not because it is a catholic church, is that true?

Most hospitals with a labor and delivery unit offer c-sections if there is an emergency or a medical need.

That includes Catholic hospitals.

The Catholic Church has never condemned c-sections and I'm not sure where your co-worker got that impression. In fact, where a surgery helps to save a baby's life and deliver him quickly, the Church commends the decision of the doctor to perform the procedure.

Call the hospital to make sure, though. If they don't have a surgeon there to do c-sections, they could arrange for a speedy transfer if needed.

It depends on if it is a hospital or a birthing center. If it is a hospital with a surgery suite then if the situation requires a c-section they will have to perform a c-section to preserve baby/mom's life. A birthing center usually doesn't have a surgery suite or an OB on site to be able to do a c-section so they'd have to transport to a nearby hospital if complications set in. They may have a policy against planned c-sections or require the OB's that practice at that hospital to promote natural birth but there are situations where a c-section is required for health and if it's a hospital I don't believe they have the right to say no....Best thing to do to get an absolute answer is call the hospital you're considering and speak with the labor and delivery nurse...She'll know all the answers and usually they are very helpful at relieving any fears.

I agree with the others: the Catholic Church has nothing against C-sections. If there is no medical reason for a C-section, you really don't have anything to worry about. If you'd like to know your specific risks, talk to your doctor. C-sections aren't as common as most people think they are.

I don't know about that one, but I've had ALL my kids at the same Catholic hospital and they had csection births there too.(almost got one myself there). So if it's jsut someone saying they don't do it because they are a Catholic hospital, don't believe it. If you are in doubt though, call the hospital and ask. I don't know of any hospital that doesn't have csections ready incase of emergency or mispresentation or mother's/baby's health.

If its a matter of having to have a c section, then they would legally have to do so, or face malpractice suits and probably close their doors. The best thing to do is call the place and ask. Good luck and congrats!

I am not sure, but I wound not think it is true because sometimes the baby is physically unable to come out or needs to come out a lot quicker.
