I misunderstood when you said partner. Since you have permission, just a quick line that so-and-so will be out of work for 3 months and you'd like to take up a collection. Any more than that really would be humiliating for her. I wouldn't play up the baby aspect because it sets people up to think she's now going to be unreliable because she has a baby. Good luck!

When you say "a partner suggested to do a collections ..."
do you mean a partner in the business / company you work for?

If so - what I'd do is ask that partner if it would be acceptable for other employees to donate some of their accumlated sick days to allow her to continue drawing her pay.

3 months off is a long time - the norm is generally 6 weeks - so perhaps she has already made financial provisions to allow her the extra time .... maybe?

It might be a good idea too to discuss with the partner that perhaps sick time could be contributed to an "account" that would allow coverage in the future whenever this situation comes up again.

Some employers allow their employees the option of payroll deductions in $10 increments that goes into a hardship fund. Whenever someone needs funds from that account - someone can make a request on their behalf. There would need to be a review team that would make determinations on the submissions.

Good luck.
