why do we have two senators

When the United States adopted the Constitution, the smaller states were afraid the large ones would dominate them completely. So, two houses of Congress were formed. One, the House of Representatives, where each state gets at least one, and the rest are apportioned by population. So California, as the biggest state population has a lot of Congressmen.
Now the other house was the Senate, and every state was given two Senators. It was done so a state like Delaware has as much clout in the Senate as a California does. That is why California has two senators.

Because the constitution mandates two senators for each state, so the USA has 100 senators. The number of congressmen however is population based, so the house of representatives is proportionally represented in congress.

All states have two senators.
It's a question of balance when it comes to elected officials deciding the nations fate when they go to vote on important issues.
But to keep things fair each state also has representatives.
The number of representatives differs from state to state, according to that states population.
Between the house of representatives and the senate (together they are called "congress") each state is supossed to have it's fair amount of influence on the affairs of our nation.
