If you don't use your return address, there is no place to return it to. If you plan on selling a lot and don't want people to know your home address, get a post office box or go to one of those places that will give you an address and handle your mail for you.

They will, but if something happens and it must be returned, you will not know it.

Such as, No Such Address, Undeliverable as Addressed, No Forwarding Address, No Person at this Address, Deceased. Or your mail gets mangled in a machine and makes the delivery address unreadable.

Plus, some places may be suspicious of letters or packages without return addresses.

Yes, it will, but you may never know if the item mailed reached its location.
Also, some financial institutions now will not accept mail without the return address.

The USPS policy does not require return addresses for just any piece of mail, but that doesn t mean the clerks won t hassle you.

Yes they will. I suppose you could put any bogus return address. They have a rule about it but it can't be inforced.

sheesh - fedo's answer is the only one so far that makes sense.

Ask any postman. They don't care. If it gets lost in the system you just don't get it back.

Edit: Oops when I started there were only 3 answers, more like 10 or so when I finished. Adapt my answer accordingly :)

You can never tell with the post office. I had them tell me once that I had to put a return address on the envelope I was mailing. The post office is not federally run anymore. It has been privatized. If you notice, the customer service is not that great anymore since they privatized it.
