Barry Sanders, he had no O-line to protect him, so all his running was on his own. Emmit had the best O-line ever that he ran behind, if Barry had that he would have so many more stats.

1. Barry
2. Walter
3. Emit

Emmit was no where near as good as Payton. Put Payton behind those Dallas lines of the 90s, he would have racked up yards that would have never been touched. I'm a Packers fan and Payton is still clearly the greatest. The only the come close are Sanders or Brown.

Walter Peyton is the greatest RB I ever saw play, granted Jim Brown looks like a monster on film and I didn't see him play. Walter played most of his career on losing teams and put up great numbers, I find it amusing that people compare Emmit Smith to Walter. Lets make one thing perfectly clear, if Walter had an O line like Emmit did he would have run for 30,000 yards. No comparison.

In 10 years, we may be talking about Adrian Peterson in the same breath as Payton and Jim Brown. As long as it's not O.J. The offensive line makes for a great running back as well. What would Sweetness' stats been had he played for Arizona?

this question, along with the question about quarterbacks, wide recievers, etc can never be truly answered. Just know that Walter Payton was a legend, and he was one of the best in an elite group of about 4-6 others.

I don't even like to speculate "who's the greatest" questions because a lot of it is luck of the draw. I like to call them "Marinoisms", in that say, if Dan Marino was at the helm of the Montana led 49ers instead of Montana, would Marino have Superbowl rings? Would the Dolphins have beaten the Niners if Montana was QB instead of Dan? What would Emmit have been like if the Saints had drafted him instead?

Don't forget a guy named Barry Sanders who we all know would have bested both Payton and Emmitt Smith if he had not retired.

Barry Sanders is far and away the greatest of all time, he simply retired way too early.

Forget stats, Barry Sanders was the best running back of all time.
