My boyfriend wants to do Thanksgiving at our house this year. We don't have a dining room set, so he wants to take a couple of sawhorses and put a piece of plywood on top with a table cloth. I think that this would be very tacky. I told him that we could have it at our house next year and he's determinded to have it at our house. The reason being he wants both our families to be there so we don't end up going out seperate from one another so this means 10-12 people at our house. ANY IDEAS?

Herb Roasted Turkey Breast (12 lb) with Pan Gravy
Apple-Cranberry Dressing
Mashed Potatoes
Sweet Potato Casserole
Fresh Cranberry-Orange Relish
Corn
Roasted Turnips
Maple-Glazed Yams OR Bruce's Old Time Candied Yams
Grean Bean Casserole
Zucchini Casserole
Salad
Dinner Rolls
Pie - Pumpkin/Apple/Cherry

Is this to many side dishes for Thanksgiving. Everyone's help is greatly appreciated.

most of the items will be delegated to other family members to bring

You should be making the turkey and the dressing. Everyone else should be bringing the rest. If there are too many sides for the people to bring, you'll know when to cut back.

I think a plywood plank just won't do it because if it collapses someone could be hurt and a real mess could occur. It may be time for a dining table... When we entertain, there's very little table space because it's covered with food. So people eat on dining chairs in the living room, the couches, the fireplace bricks, and sitting on couches or sprawled all over the floor.

Ask the family that's coming whether they have extra chairs or TV trays.

Your menu looks awesome!! What time is dinner? If you are going to have the Sweet Potato Casserole then maybe leave off the Yam's or vise versa. Unless you just want to do all the cooking, I would ask everyone to bring a dish from your menu. As far as the table, you can rent a table and chairs pretty cheap. I agree with you, the saw horse thing is pretty tacky. Go to a rental place.

Can I come to your house?? That sounds great. As for the table, don't sweat it. It isn't about what you are sitting on or at, it is the people you are sitting with. We had ours on a ping pong table once and everyone had to bring a chair. Really, your family loves you..I really don't think the seating should be an issue. Besides, it will be a great story to tell for years to come.
I think your menu sounds great !! maybe the salad might be to much..lol as well as being just one more thing to do. If it is traditional for your or his family, then by all means, include it.
you are going to have a great time, and don't forget to delegate !!

At times we need to improvise ! no one will see the saw horse and the board just make sure that you use clamps to hold the board otherwise someone might push it when either setting down or getting up.
Now about the dinner it sound very good but I would omit either the yams or the sweet potato casserole if you are having the mash potatoes.

If you can do all that without exhausting yourself, then go for it. I think the menu sounds great! What I would suggest is maybe asking each person or family to bring one item on your menu so you're not stuck cooking everything. Or make smaller portions because you only have 10 - 12 people coming.

If there is a long table cloth, it's fine. Every one will know it is set up cuz of the holiday gathering. Will you have any help cooking? If not, ask your closest relatives to bring one of the dishes.
