I heated something without realizing the very edge of the metallic peel-off lid hadn't come with the rest. It was maybe 1/16 of an inch wide and a couple inches long.
When I heated the container in the microwave, it arced--a mini-lightning bolt--and smoked.
After letting it cool completely, we cautiously tried the microwave, which seemed to work just fine. That was at least ten years ago.

YES, You can damage the oven by putting
metal in there.
Worse was to put a sealed can in there.
You were very lucky that top failed before
enough pressure built up to harm you.
DON'T DO THAT AGAIN.

if you think of the food--or liquid as a load--and if the load is larger then the metal then nothing happenes--if the metal is larger--then the sparks well go to ground--[the inside od cabinet]--and burn the paint--the paint is a special-paint-that covers the metal-of the inside cabinet-if this does happen--you can buy a can of the micro-paint at appliance shops-and recover it-[the burnt spot of inside cabinet]--hope this helps
