Some prisoners actually survived for years by helping the camp run smoothly. Some were Kapos that were the people who did the work and security for the guards. It was very hard and desperate work.

My father in law survived a concentration camp, but it was just luck. A local farmer needed help and my father-in-law was chosen to be a slave laborer, a job that lasted for six years. Because of that, he was able to get a little more food than other camp prisoners and was out of sight of the guards for most of the day, also a tremendous help.

Concentration camps are not there to reward the bright, the strong, the tall or the beautiful. They don't care about rich or poor, talented or a klutz. They don't care about your family, your friends or your shoe size. You're there because you belong to a group that "offended" somehow, usually just by existing.
Some concentration camp survivors survived by doing things that we outside the camps wouldn't even consider.
Some people will do ANYTHING to survive.

The Jews in the camps were basicly slaves that were barely fed and some were killed just because. The Black slaves had it mush better than the Jews. The point is that if you could get by without a lot of food and if you had a lot of strength. Otherwise it was purley luck.

First, those too old, sick, etc were immediately killed. So you had to be fairly young and healthy to start. They you had to be assigned a job- either working for the camp or as slave labor. then you had to have a good constitition so you stayed healthy inspite of little food, no medicine, etc.
And luck...

strong will to live, being on your toes constantly, resourceful, and basically an all around miracle, there's no real guide to survive those horrors, you are the victim of pure evil and can be finished off on a whim
