They use radio.

When they are over a particuar place on the earth where a ground-station is in view (which is rare), then they can use line-of-sight transmission/reception.

Most of the time they use the TDRSS satellite system. There are 3 TDRSS (telemetry, data, relay, satellite system) satellites in geostationary orbit. Each satellite is parked 120 degrees apart from the others around the earth. In geostationary orbit, each satellite has a complete view of approximately 1/3 of the earth's surface (and anything in low-earth orbit, i.e. shuttles and the ISS). No matter where the ISS or shuttle is, in orbit, they are always in view of one of the TDRSS satellites further out in space.

Sometimes they may be at the 'edge' of reception, so some high bandwidth signals may have to wait until they are in 'full' view, but low-bandwidth telemetry and voice is always available.

For your project, you should look up VLF transmission.

No this cannot, radio waves which are used for space communication cannot penetrate the earth.

Nothing in the electromagnetic spectrum can penetrate deep enough or would be too dangerous.

You can use radio but you would have to station a lot of radio stations on the way to bend the light around places.

The other alternative is to use a very long cable to relay messages.
