During the tanning process, leather is split into layers (a solid hide is too thick to use for leather furniture). And, the top layer is called "top grain" leather. This is the best leather to use for furniture. The bottom layers are called split layers. Avoid these, as they are not as durable as the top grain.

To reduce costs, some manufacturers of leather furniture (even the top-quality manufacturers) offer an option where they use top grain leather for all seating contact surfaces, and then identically matching vinyl for non-seating areas. This can reduce the cost of the furniture by about 50%, without sacrificing looks, durability, or quality. After all, if you never see the back of your sofa, why would you pay twice the price to cover it with real leather when no one will notice the difference, anyway?

When you purchase leather furniture, they usually treat the leather with conditioners and anti-staining products. With leather, though, it really is difficult to mess it up where you can't either just wipe things off with a damp cloth, or clean a stain with mild soap and water. The dealers also offer stain and damage warranties, where you pay extra for them to clean, repair, or replace a stained or damaged piece for an extended period of time (like 5 years).

One other thing is that you should sit in a number of different types of sofas and chairs before you buy something. Subtle differences in design and construction can make a huge difference in how comfortable leather furniture can be. Does it have lumbar support (very important for me)? Does it have over-stuffed cushioning (very comfortable)? Does the back of the sofa/seats come straight up or does it come up at an angle (straight backs can make sitting comfortably impossible)? Do you like the surface of the leather (some are cold and hard, while others are soft and comfortable)?

Last year, I got a Pallister leather sofa with manual recliners on each end for about $1000. I also got two matching stadium seats with power recline and a middle console for about $2000. The seats especially are extremely comfortable and I regularly fall asleep in them at night and don't wake up until the next morning. My short-haired dogs shed a lot, but the hair just slips down into the cracks and down to the floor under the furniture.

I love my leather furniture and would never buy anything else again.
