Say a test had 175 questions and you missed 20. How would you figure the percent you got right or wrong? It's been over 20 years since I was in school & I forgot how. Don't you divide 175 by 20?

DIVIDE THE AMOUNT YOU GOT RIGHT BY THE TOTAL AMOUNT. THEN MULTIPLY BY 100.

155 RIGHT/175 TOTAL=.885714
MOVE DECIMAL OVER 2 PLACES TO THE RIGHT
88.57%

A 'percent' is another way of saying 'a hundredth'.

For example, since 1/2 = 50/100, we say that one half is fifty percent.

How many did you miss? 20 out of 175. What fraction is that? 20/175.

Can we express this fraction in hundredths? Yes but the numerator may be a fractional number.
20/175 = 0.1142857...
which you could rewrite as
11.42857/100
which could be expressed as 11.32857%
Normally, we don't use that many decimals, so you could say 11.4%.

How many did you get right? If we assume that you tried them all, then either we do the same calculation with (175-20)/175
or we realise that 175 represents 100% (the entire thing) and we take
100% - 11.4% leaving 88.6%

You didn't sound too dumb, as your question was expressed clearly.

You subtract 20 from 175 and then you divide that answer from 175, so 175-20=155/175=about89%

You take 155 (175 total minus the 20 you missed) and divide that by 175 to get the percentage (around 88%)

100% is the whole thing. Therefore 175 questions = 100%.

If you missed 20 your score is 175 -20 = 155.

The decimal equivalent is 155/175 = .8857142857. Move decimal two places to the right and get 88.6 % rounded to one place. Think of 1 dollar as 100% Not all conversions from fractions to decimals come out even. Such as your % score. 20/175 = .114 or 11.4% wrong
