It's believed Nico Rosberg is at the top of the McLaren shopping list. However, recent reports suggest Frank Williams and Patrick Head are unwilling to part with their driver.
You can interpret that as follows: Offer us lots and lots of money and you can have Nico.

A logical choice would be to hire someone with a lot of experience and who would be willing to play a supporting role in the team since they obviously want lewis as their number one. I don't know if niko, hekki or the other young drivers would be such a good choice, i think mclaren will be taking quite a gamble by doing so. They need somone who can provide a lot of feedback and help to develop the car as alonso has for his teams before.
I heard that webber may be one of the choices as a teammate, i know that he's already under contract from redbull but there are ways around that.

I would say Heikki Kovalainen is most likely.
Firstly, Alonso would love to go back to Renault where he got on well with Giancarlo Fisichella and the team in genral. This means that the easiest option would be a straight swap between Fernando Alonso and Kovalainen. Renault would be happy with getting Alonso, and Alonso would be happy. McLaren would cherish the young talent and we all know how Ron Dennis feels about Finnish drivers (remember Hakkinen and Raikkonen). Hamilton would go 1st driver and would most likely win the championship with Kovalainen aiding him. Everybody wins. Except maybe Nico Rosberg...

I think Heikki Kovelainen will replace Alonso at McLaren so that Alonso can take Heikki's place at Renault.

I think it'll be either Rosberg or Heikki. It could also be Vettel, but BMW definitely want to keep him. As for Rosberg, it'll be tough to get him in because Williams are holding on to him. It might be Heikki but I don't think Flavio will be pleased if he goes off to McLaren, at which the boss (Ron Dennis) and Flav don't get along at all.

Personally I think Kubica is the best choice - and have done for some time - he is a great talent who would really benefit from the McLaren experience, and I reckon he would get on with Hamilton.

It's down to Nico, Ady and Heikki. Well Williams ain't gonna let Nico go that easily, it would be a dream come true for Ady but no contact has been made, and Heikki is free as of right now. So it's down to Nico and Heikki. Macca is pursuing Nico like crazy but if they can't have him, then they'd probably go for Kovy.

what current f1 driver would want to be the ugly stepsister to hamilton moving forward? maybe find someone from gp2?
but the real answer is i dont think anyone can replace alonso in terms of both driving and helping with car development. the latter is where they will miss him the most.
