I am asking this in order to apply it to communication underground with those on the surface: NB i do not beleive in underground civilizations...its a science project...thats all.

The Space Shuttles communicate by means of two-way radio. There is no connection with anything underground. Radio signals do not penetrate the ground very effectively at all. Besides, it stinks down there.

The shuttle communicate with a TDRSS satellites which relay the signal to ground station. This gives almost 100% coverage.

They communicate using radio via a number of routes. Directly with Houston when they are in the line of sight, through relay stations such as those in hawaii and australia, and through relay satellites, placed in orbit to allow for constant communications with the ground.

You can't communicate with people underground with radio as radiowaves cannot penetrate the ground.
The only thing I can think of for your project is cables.

They use 2-way radio, beamed up & down from various stations on the Earth.
