Actually I think the US was going to eventually get involved in this conflict, without or without the attack on Pearl Harbor. Many historians believe that the US joined WWI because they needed to protect the British, who invested heavily in the US. By December 1941 the US was already beginning the push to join the war. There was already discussions about the draft and the government canceled all discharges. By Pearl Harbor America's involvement in the war was a done deal. That's why the Japanese attacked, they knew America was going to be in soon and they wanted to knock out their naval fleet before it got moving.

The only way that the US would not have gotten involved is if the British fell during the Battle of Britain. We would have never joined in without the use of Britain as a launch point for the war. If the British were out of the war then the Americans and Canadians would never be able to land in France on D-Day.

On the other hand, if Germany would have defeated Britain that may have enpowered Hitler. He could very well have decided to move against the Americans once Europe was his (especially if the Japanese were comfortable in the Pacific). Imagine if we were attacked on both coasts by Germany and Japan. The world would like mighty different.

In all, it's impossible to foretell what could have happened...it's almost like predicting the future.

Interestingly enough, Germany declared war on the USA, not the other way around, so there was little it could have done to to avoid war:- see Germany's Declaration of War at http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/policy/1941/411211d.html

I agree with what David said. If Japan had not attacked then we probably would not have gone to war.

it would have been a hard sell to the public if Japan had not attacked. Until then we helped our allies but did not get directly involved.
