After a while, some people start taking each other for granted. Relationships are like flowers; we need to "water" them to keep them fresh and alive.

Marriage fails when partners do not meet each other's emotional needs.

The most common emotional needs are:
Affection
Sexual Fulfillment
Conversation
Recreational Companionship (doing things together)
Honesty and Openness
Physical Attractiveness
Financial Support
Domestic Support (clean-up/laundry/etc)
Family Commitment (helping raise kids emotionally)
Admiration

It's going to be different for everyone. I work as a marriage counselor, and I've seen pretty much everything. It's usually a process, except in extreme cases. Usually it's cheating and the betrayed is unwilling to forgive or get over it, constant bickering about little things, letting communication slide, not realizing a happy marriage takes work to maintain.

Lack of communication. Life's growing apart instead of together. Taking each other for granted. Not keeping the romance and passion alive. Forgetting to be each other's best friend. Neglecting the other person's feelings. Not being considerate of what each other wants. Not doing things to make the other person feel special.
